I’m continuing to explore sustainable floristry with this candle, moss and dried flower bowl. This was put together for a simple family dinner. Instead of having a massive purge of stuff this January. I am really enjoying pulling together festive leftovers and using in new ways.
Candle, moss and flower bowls are great for making the most of limited materials. I’m head over heels in love with moss. It grounds any arrangement plus it looks great on its own. The moss I have used here, has turned various shades vintage cream as it has dried. Softening the bright orange of strawflowers. Which despite NEVER sowing this colour always appear and always perform best.
The array of candles available now is vast and I’ve become more confident in using them up. Knowing there will always be new ones available, I rarely keep any for ‘best’ anymore.
New candles are my favourite cheap thrill and the quickest way to bring a flash of new colour to old favourite tablecloths and tableware.
These tiny twisty candles are from my local Factory Shop and the cream hand dipped are a TK Maxx find. As is the pink dish (from many many years ago). I rarely buy new things but usually end up with a candle/plate/notebook combination whenever I visit. I always feel a trip to TK Maxx is like a trip to the top of the Magic Faraway Tree! You never know what land will be there.

These candle, moss and dried flower bowls are super quick to pull together. They are great for using up simple floristy supplies like glass flower frogs and metal pin frogs. Try Etsy or Ebay for vintage glass flower frogs and new metal versions. They can turn really basic material into something intentional and special. Definitely worth adding to your supply cupboard if you can.
For this arrangement I used a low glass bowl and glass flower frog. I went with glass as it didn’t move and the holes were perfect for adding the small candles. I found it best to slightly heat the end of the candle before twisting it into position. If I was adding fresh flowers I’d add some water to the dish but as this was all dry I left out. Once the candles were in place, I tucked moss in between them to cover the flower frog. I was going to leave as is but there were some old strawflowers in my eyeline so added these around the edge of the bowl.
Honestly, it took about five minutes. I then got carried away and did the same using dinky tea light holders and rosehips. These tea lights from Twinn Pottery are so precious, I love them! There aren’t any in stock but you could just get this candle bowl and save yourself the above steps!!!
Being a dried arrangement and using quick burning candles – it could be dangerous. I made this for Sunday supper and made sure nothing was left burning unattended. In the spirit of using up festive left overs, I cooked a delicious red wine beef stew and baked a panettone bread and butter pudding (using a chocolate orange panettone, yum!).
Hope you’ve enjoyed this one. Here are more ideas to keep you inspired.
