Quite spontaneously I began a simple summer craft project series over on my Instagram account. I wanted to share simple ways you can bring flowers into the house at this time of year. High summer isn’t a time of abundance, especially not with the heatwave we have going on.
These simple summer floral based craft projects, use a few happy stems and are easily refreshed as needed. Being a mum in the summer holidays, solo time is almost impossible to find. I hope these tutorials give you a few moments to yourself.
A simple fresh flower wreath/candle holder. Using a mossed Christmas wreath (yes really) add a few tiny bud vases. I used these from Sostrene Greene and fixed with wire around the neck to secure. I rehydrated the wreath by leaving in a dish of water for a few hours. Add a mix of cut flowers to each vase, mixing heights and textures if possible. Add a storm lantern to the centre, Ikea has affordable versions. A trip to Ikea also makes a great day out, when you’ve run out of ideas! Then add a candle to the storm lantern. This one is from Gisela Graham but any candle will do.
What I love about this project, is its versatility. No mossed wreath? Find some fresh growth on a shrub (you need bendy stems) and make a simple twisted version. No wreath at all? Find a nice plate, bud vases and a candle. If you like a charity shop challenge, this could be a good one. You can see the reel here.
Really Simple Floral Garland. As soon as saw these ‘Vases on a String’ I knew they’d be useful. I hosted a workshop at the weekend and needed to move everything inside due to a mystery leak! I wanted my dining room to feel fresh but not chaotic as there’s always a lot going on on workshop days.
Using my permanently positioned nails I hung one to each side of the fireplace wall. Joined and fix in the middle with some craft wire, letting a few vases hang downwards. A random selection of vases were filled with dried flowers- a mauve statice mix in this case. The rest filled with fresh flowers. It was so quick to create and will be up for a while to come!
