Making ribbon from flower petals is niche but a favourite winter project. Using every last petal is so important to me. As the tulips start to fade, I greedily save their beautiful petals. The colours completely change as they dry giving a whole new colour palette to work with. I save them in a glass jar for winter days when I need to get my hands and heart working with flowers once more.
Like many flowers growers, I’m impatiently waiting for the flowers to return. As I type I’m watching the rain saturate the garden making it almost inaccessible. Instead of cursing the weather, I’m planning a big bark order to keep the moisture in and making flower ribbons! Fabric and flowers are my two great loves – I get no end of pleasure cosying up in my craft room making ribbons from flower scraps. Like my washi tape and hydrangea ribbon this tulip ribbon makes the most of the very last petals. Here I have mixed it with left over leather and sequin scraps. Catching glimpses of different colour and texture combinations as its gets wound and unwound sets off those creative sparks.
This year I am growing a selection of soft yellow and pink tulips and have hopefully staggered my planting and varieties for a wonderful start to the 2024 season. Fresh flowers will be available early April and if you do buy a bunch save those petals, they are just waiting to be turned into something beautiful.
