Creative Living: Dry January, Floral Style

Let’s look at dried flowers for January home styling. When it comes to choosing flowers in January pickings can feel slim. There is an abundance of Bay and Ivy but not much else.

The days can feel flat and cold on the surface but dig deeper and there is still abundance. Never have dried flowers, sweetly scented candles and fairy lights been more welcome.

Once the decorations are down and stored for another year, I like to refresh my mantle with dried flowers. I have to confess, I didn’t grow these alliums – they are from a church fair. Too beautiful to leave behind. This is the time of year when dried flowers really shine, a bridge between the seasons giving hope and inspiration for harvests to come. A walk in nature will provide rich pickings (don’t over pick) of seed heads and leaves curled bronze. Only a few stems in a bottle or vase are required to bring a dash of nature to a room. It seems cruel to stash fairy lights away just when they are needed the most, a few draped over a mirror or running along a shelf or mantle brings necessary comfort for dark days.

Whenever I want a room to feel enveloping, lighting a candle is my first stop. We have to enjoy what the season brings and January should bring candles.

When it comes to lighting candles near dried flowers, it goes without saying to leave plenty of space and NEVER leave unattended. There was a spare ten minutes between lunch with a friend and catching a train where I dashed into Anthropologie and found these on sale. It my first visit to Anthropologie as a newly graduated fashion designer that implanted the importance of filling a space with scent as well as beauty. Lighting a candle signals it’s time for soft clothes and powering down – embrace the season of stillness and rejuvenation.

If you are looking for dried flowers then Flowers From the Farm should be your first stop. Finding British grown dried flowers is harder than expected. My first recommendation would be finding your local flower grower, Flowers from the Farm will be able to direct you to those closest. If not have a look at these lovely growers who sell online.
