With Easter happening this weekend I wanted to share these mossy nests with you. Niche, sure! But these moss nests are so sweet and created themselves by pure accident. I couldn’t keep them to myself.
One of the many things I love about nature and working closely with the seasons is witnessing the handover from one time to another. There is a constant flow of moment – gentle but powerful. It keeps me grounded. As someone who has worried about the future. Being part of natures movement has taught me to enjoy the ride rather than focus on the destination. Each season knows when it’s time to go and let the next take the lead. These mossy nests started by accident over Christmas have passed the baton to Spring celebrations. To be used and enjoyed in a completely different way.
Over winter I have fallen for using moss in my work. Not only is it vital in sustainable floristry, it looks and smells amazing. I have been experimenting with it over the past few months you can see past projects here and here.
These mossy nests however, took me by surprise. I had filled a bowl with moss over Christmas and popped a candle in the centre. Nice. When the candle was done and it was time to clear Christmas, I was left with this perfect moss nest.
This lead me to experiment further and as such have come up with perfect nests ideal for natural Easter decorations.
They do take a few weeks to prepare (sorry for the short notice) but save the idea. You never know when it’ll be needed. First take a small bowl fill with damp moss and place another smaller bowl in the centre. You may need to add a few weights if the moss makes the central bowl ‘float’. Leave to dry out. Remove all the bowls and you’ll be left with nest’s of your own.
You can then fill them. Here I have used some handmade air dry clay eggs, finished with paper. I also made some tiny flower arrangements. I used my favourite Twinn Pottery tealight holders and a small pin frog to hold the flowers in place. I then popped them into the centre of the nest.
I like a full mantle so added a Lotts to Go! vase and some elegant bud vases to finish my Spring mantle display. I have flowers available for the weekend, get in touch if you’d like some for your Easter celebrations.
