British Grown Flowers : A May Wedding at the Roslin Beach Hotel

From seed to stem and back again. A look at a May Wedding at the Roslin Beach Hotel.

I learnt many lessons on my floral journey last year. One of those was realising just how unique and personal my style of growing and arranging the flowers is.

Welcoming brides into my home, getting to know them and having them watch their wedding flowers grow is a special experience. Due to many different factors, we never quite know what the final day will look like. That is part of the fun.

The wedding I’m sharing today is the complete Lotts and Lots wedding process. The wedding  featured took place in late May 2024. It was nurtured from seed all the way through potting up, growing, harvesting, arranging, drying, making and back to seed. The seeds I have growing this year come from this yield.

The bride wanted small all white hand-tied bouquets for herself and bridesmaids. With matching floral crowns for her flower girls. For the tables the white theme was continued with table centrepieces in vintage lassi cups, inspired by the venue. The cake was finished with flowers too, incorporating the edible varieties used throughout the wedding.

We wanted to keep the flowers in some way after the wedding. They were dried and turned into a wreath using the bouquets and table flower plus the silk ribbon from the bridal bouquet. I even made a mini version using her daughters flower crown. Once the crop was finished, the seeds were harvested and re-sown in Autumn. Ready to start the whole process again.

The journey from seed to stem, will vary year to year.  With the seasons and the weather having a direct influence on how wedding flowers will grow. At the initial consultation, we exchange our ideas. The bride will come with screen shots and dreams of her ideal day and I come with the flowers that grow.

If for example, someone with a September wedding wanted Peonies. I’d have to break the sad news that they are not available but would offer a suitable romantic alternative. From working out what we want versus what we can have – budget can be a factor here. We then create a plan that is bespoke. Colours get selected and the details come together as the plans unfold. I especially love all conversations about ribbons and table stationery.

In this modern age of AI and copy and paste inspiration, I offer something that is real and rooted. Years of design training has taught me to pull ideas from different sources and not look just to the internet. I work with my wonderful customers, showing them around the garden and watching out for the moments when their eyes light up. Flowers bring the magic to your day. They connect the dots and if energy is your thing. They give off such the most vibrant energy and even though you can’t see it,  you can feel it. And it is the best feeling.

If you’d like your wedding flowers nurtured by me. I would love to hear from you. Contact me to discuss your day. From elopements to a barn full of friends and family. I’m here at the ready.
