It’s the start of dried flower season. I could easily ditch my calendar and just work to rhythm of the flower beds. July and the end of school brings hot pink Astilbe. The end of the holidays and late August brings handfuls of dried flowers.

This week has been a gentle one, catching up on washing and flowers after two (glorious) weeks away. Flowers have been fed and watered ready for a late summer harvest. Most excitingly, I have been gathering bunches of statice and peachy strawflowers to stash away over winter. Telling me dried flower season has begun.

I don’t want to bring up the subject of slugs but they have been menacing. Anything that survived a midnight rampage feels like it should be celebrated. Strawflowers (Autumn sown) and statice managed to beat the slimy beasts and have been flowering abundantly.

One of the main reasons I’d encourage you to grow dried dried flowers is their ability to not only keep their beautiful colours but work in tricky situations. I put these party vases together for a local customer. She wanted flowers for an anniversary party but our holidays didn’t co-ordinate for a fresh flower delivery. Instead, we opted for a selection of dried flower vases that could be prepped well in advance. I used a mix of different height vases, finishing some with a few ribbon bows. I wanted them to feel relaxed but intentional and easily dotted about the party.

Echoing wild flower meadows of late July. I wanted the flowers to look wild and wispy – as if they’d been freshly picked.  After careful curation, what resulted was a romantic collection of flowers, designed to give a special celebration a floral finish. Fresh lavender tucked into each vase, giving them a delicate scent as people walked past.

These, of course, can be reused for any event going forward. Tucked onto mantles and popped onto tables, they will continue to bring joy long after the party is over.
