It’s the same every year. April swoops into the cutting garden and delicately paints the once bare flower beds with colour. Sweet washes of forget-me-not blue, pops of tulips and dandelions making a break for it signal the start of a new season. I  swear it happens over night.

I’ve been caught up inside the past few weeks; my MiL began cancer treatment, our kitchen refurb finally began and of course the Easter holidays has meant anytime time outside has been limited. The cutting garden has thankfully taken care of itself. I first added cutting beds in 2021 around this time of year. Unsure if I was ever going to be able to fill them. Six Spring’s later, the beds are full and raring to go. As much as I have turned my garden into my business, I still feel it supports me; emotionally and spiritually. The last month has stretched my capacity to its limits and I have been doubtful at times if I’ll be able to make things work this summer. The tulips popped just as I’d run out of steam, a reminder to keep on going.

April is an all-you-can-eat buffet of gardening jobs. You can make raised cut flower beds, you can basically sow all the seeds and of course you can begin to harvest any spring bulbs.

No trip to the compost bin is wasted as I always return with a few snipping’s. I’m eagerly watching buds of peonies swell and checking the roses to see what will happen. Despite taking thousands of photos of the garden, I’ve forgotten all the colours and wait to be reminded!

I’ll pop a summary of garden jobs below, I have been writing for many years now so there is a library of my experiences to share. The biggest learning this month, perhaps serving a reminder to myself, is to let things just be.

Even if time is limited enjoy the brief moments of relief the garden can offer. Gardening and growing flowers is the most magical thing to do. I hope over the years I’ve shown what’s possible in a small space. This year I want to encourage you to take small steps when time is tight. There are eight growing months ahead, I just counted! Which gives us plenty of opportunity to try our best with what we’ve got and make it beautiful. Here are some great posts for sowing and growing…
