May Floral ‘Quickie’ Workshop

May welcomed the first floral Quickie workshop outside under the hawthorn tree. A big moment for me, as it signals the start of a new growing season. There is nothing better than a gathering of floral loving folk, working with the best of the month’s flowers.

For May’s Quickie workshop, I wanted to write and host a floral project based on the hedgerows and flowers that grow naturally together at this time of year. Being in the centre of a busy town, we’re not surrounded by hedgerows. However, if you start to open your eyes you’ll see little pockets of nature popping up in unusual places. I was really inspired by a tiny patch of hardy geraniums, dandelions and blue bells who cleverly placed themselves in a pocket of sunlight underneath the branches of the trees and a tangle of roses. A perfect unexpected moment.

With the inspiration set, moss filled metal buckets (picked up at the wholesalers) were prepped for us to work with. Sustainable floristry practices are at the heart of my work and style. These buckets can be refilled and reused for the whole of the flowering season. They will look just as beautiful filled with roses, dahlia’s and sunflowers and placed on a table as they did filled with fresh May foliage.

May bought such a gorgeous selection of flowers. Currants and hardy geranium formed the base and structure. Cow parsley provided froth and whimsy. Viburnum Snowball added detail and elegance. White lilac, which I find lasts much longer cut than it’s actual lilac counterpart, lent incredible scent. Briza maxima grasses added some shimmy. And finally, the last of the tulips added a delicate flash of colour for those who wanted it.

Quickie workshops are now a mix of friendly regulars and a new faces. Everyone who attended created their woodland inspired centrepieces with ease and delight. Leaving plenty of time to answer and growing questions and have a well earn cup of tea. You can see more here.

A favourite moment is looking along the table and seeing all the creations come together. Honestly, its such a monthly highlight.

Each month great care is taken to set the table. This time I wanted it to feel green, with a vintage nod. Using a mix of green gingham tablecloths and pink streamers, a cosy outdoor space was created and took moments to set up. A real nostalgic summer party table.

These centrepieces make for a great workshop and one that I would like to offer on a regular basis for private and/or corporate floral workshops. If you are interested in having me run a workshop for you. Whether that be for a group of floral loving friends or in a corporate environment. Get in touch. I’m based in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex and can host within the cutting garden or travel if needed. If you’d like a sample of my teaching style you can see a video I made following this workshop here.
