Creative Living : A DIY Autumn Treasures Candle Holder

For this DIY Autumn Treasures Candle Holder, you need to imagine you’re a tiny fairy living amongst the hedgerows! The aim of these candle holders is to feel like you have captured the magic of Autumn. It’s all about creating a tiny whimsical world within a jar. Stay with me…

They are really easy to make as they use up any left over stems, petals, moss, leaves, beads and ribbon. Anything that feels like treasure to you will work. They can be made in two ways; either as a tiny wreath or a mossy nest. This is one of those tutorials that should be used as inspiration rather than a step-by-step guide. I will of course guide you through the best I can. I found more of these candle holders on Etsy, if you are local I have plenty spare if you’d like to purchase.

First make a tiny wreath base, willow is my preferred stem of choice but again any supple branch will work. Make a small circle by twisting the branches around each other, it doesn’t need to be too sturdy as there’ll be more added to it along the way.

There is a secret wreath making guide here which should help you. Taking some craft wire, for this gold or silver look more intentional, take a length of wire and start to wrap moss, leaves, flowers, etc onto your wreath base. If you want to add more, you can include beads, bells or fabric scraps into the wreath. Aim to have bits moving and off the wreath base so it feels alive with texture.

If there are any flower heads or seeds pods that won’t stay put, get a glue gun out an glue into place.

To finish make tiny bows from thin ribbon, I’m on a velvet kick, but see what you have an use that. I made tiny loops of wire and stuck the bows onto the ‘wire sticks’ and then added into the wreath. To finish I carefully placed into my jar and added another velvet bow and candle.

For the mossy nest, make a small scrunch of chicken wire and moss, it should fit in the palm of your hand. In much the same way as the wreath wrap petals, beads and leaves in and around it. Add some bows and place in a jar to finish.

There are so many things I love about these Autumn Treasures Candle Holders. One, is the simplicity, two, is making treasure out of scraps and three, is how special they make a table or mantle look without taking over. They make you pause and take a closer look which is often forgotten in this crazy fast world.
