I picked April’s British grown flower bouquet with hours to spare! I am determined to keep my monthly bouquet task going, even as things get busier.
This months bouquet is absolutely full of frothy beauty. Danceline and Charming Lady Tulips are firm favourites. They are a peony type tulip and look as good online as they do off. The flower heads unfurl revealing layers of petals which look hand painted. They sit as perfect companions in my cutting beds. I kept my tulip offering smaller this year. Focusing on a few favourites, like these. This is the third year I’ve grown Danceline and second I’ve grown Charming Lady. Both will be back next year.
Alongside the tulips are handfuls of white lilac. This white variety is a lovely self seeder and came into full bloom the day it was picked. Although fleeting, it smells delicious. If you got the right week, it’d be amazing in a wedding bouquet. I always sear the ends of my stems to keep them looking as fresh as possible.
There are a few old wives tales about bringing lilac inside. After some light digging around the internet. I found lilacs were often used as funeral flowers because of their heady scent. The association between death has followed them ever since. I feel like its bad press, lilacs are lovely inside and out!
Alongside the tulips and lilac are wonderful Viburnum Opulus Roseum Snowball flowers. I put three into the garden when I first started my cut flower business. This year they have really established themselves and have been producing these gorgeous pom pom blooms.
The final flowers worth a mention are glorious Geums. I LOVE them. They are super hardy and come into flower as April shifts into May. They will keep flowering for months and bring a sweet touch to any bouquet. I have been adding them to the cut flower beds and pots with no plans of stopping!
This months bouquet was a real delight. I head into the garden with a set idea of what my monthly bouquet ‘should’ look like. It rarely turns out as I imagine, always a better version. The lesson here is to give the flowers space do their thing. Nature knows best!
