The Cutting Garden : June 2025

I’m late to post June’s cutting garden update because I’ve been in the garden!  As we fell into June, the weeds took advantage of the half term and grew quicker than ever. What looked like lush full beds from the house were actually wonderful crops of bindweed and buttercups. The buttercups I can handle but bindweed is an absolute no! I must have spent about 5% of my life pulling it out!

Even though I’m committed to keeping these monthly posts going. Outside called and that’s where I have been all week. Pulling weeds, replanting beds and giving everything a jolly good feed.

It’s the time of year when the spent spring flowers need to come out. For me its a mix of forget-me-nots and hardy geranium. They get past their best, set seed and hide the tangle of bindweed shoots. With rainfall limited this year, it stops the rain and water getting to the roots of the plants that need it. Clearing beds means there is more space to work with. Growing cut flowers on a small scale means all bed space is required, I have challenged myself to use up every space I can.

With all crops that can be in the ground, in the ground. I have potted up my last flowers for the year –  Mexican Paintbrush , Sweet Annie, Zinnia and Dahlia’s. June see’s three weddings. When all the wedding flowers have gone, these guys will go to the beds.

There have been a few varieties which I missed, I’m using plug plants to fill the gaps. There have been some great offers floating around the internet which I have taken advantage of. However, the best plug plants have to be Picked at Dawn. I used their plug plants in the Autumn and they are flowering beautifully. I highly recommend checking out their Friday evening sales.

Aside from weeding, watering, feeding, planting and picking, of course. Don’t forget to enjoy it all. The summer garden is work but it’s the best work. I was meant to be doing my washing up last night but instead found myself in the flowers. There was still warmth in the sun at 7pm, next doors honeysuckle mingled with the roses and sweet peas. It all felt so heavenly. I share passionately about the garden because it’s changed me so much. I want everyone to get that ‘garden feeling’ . There’s no better time to experience it than June.
