A wedding of roses and currants. The Coachmakers Arms, London. July 2025

Do you believe in dreams coming true? For this July wedding of roses and currants my dream certainly did! The day before the request came in. I said to myself, ‘I wish someone would ask for a wedding of just roses and currants’. The universe certainly heard my call with this beautiful wedding.

Despite it’s relaxed and ‘just picked’ feel. This wedding required a few sleepless nights and plenty planning. During the summer’s heatwave, British grown roses were almost impossible to track down in July. I asked all my local growers, no luck. I leant into the expertise of Evolve Flowers to help me source these incredible roses. They came in from Columbia, with the pickers names attached to each box. Very special but challenged my values of using only seasonal British flowers.

The wonderful brief allowed plenty of space for creativity in terms of styling. For flowers it had to be roses, nothing else. It was given much thought but decided someone was going to do this wedding and I really wanted it to be me. Trusting I would choose the most sustainable option in this situation, I went ahead.

The wedding was on a Saturday and confirmation of my order only arrived on the Monday. A lot of pacing happened! When the roses arrived they were extremely tight. The whole essence of the wedding was a relaxed ‘family style’ atmosphere. The blooms needed to feel really natural. To achieve this, I placed a selection of flowers in different lights. Some in my hot window, others outside, some in the shade. Each petal was carefully eased open to allow them relax and ‘burst’ open. To encourage a lived in look, buds and leaves from my cutting beds (and my mums) were carefully woven into each vase. Alongside a mix of currant leaves and unripe fruit. It was a lovely mix.

For the vase selection, I found a few beautiful Edwardian bud vases in a local antique shop. They were mixed with different  ribbed bud vases. I like to use a mix of heights when working with bud vases. Varying heights and allows a natural movement and interest along the table. When creating bud vases, I like to make sure the swirls of leaves and buds sit perfectly together. Nothing is ever plonked in a vase. Each element has to be able to sit in harmony with it’s fellow floral companions.

Colour was another really important element to this design. The walls of the wedding breakfast room were a gorgeous shade of green. The flowers were specifically chosen to work with the wall colour. Soft pinks with additions of apricots and yellows from the garden gave a truly romantic look to the vases. Contrasting to bustle of the Marylebone streets below. With seemingly simple design, every detail needed work. Using a green tablecloth helped me balance the colours as I created.

This meant when it was time to set up at the venue. It was a straight forward process (aided by my children), the many vases were carefully unpacked and distributed along the tables. We found little nooks, each one becoming alive with every carefully placed vase. By the time we finished the tables looked wonderful. Each a fluffy cascade of blousy roses with the occasional fallen petal. Absolute perfection, if I do say so myself.

I have plenty of availability for 2026 and beyond. If you are looking for unique wedding flowers and can’t find what you’re looking for please get in touch. I work in and around Essex and London and love creating flowers for small(ish) events full of love and personality.
