Christmas DIY : Handmade Candles and Easy Decorations

For today’s Christmas DIY archive post I’m looking at simple handmade Christmas candles and decoration ideas. These make great gifts or provide a perfect handmade touch to festivities.

From hosting wreath and candle workshops over the years with Delmeza, I learnt the importance of pouring the perfect candle. There is something undeniably satisfying about melting the wax and stirring essential oils. It  makes you feel like a wizard! Over the years I’ve made my own candles (with no real knowledge) and decorated them with hand dyed ribbons, dried flowers and hand made tags. Now I know better, I have found some great candle making kits that would have saved me a lot of time in sourcing the right materials. These kits come with everything needed to pour beautiful candles.

Next stop on the Christmas train are these simple DIY decoration ideas. This is the time of year when the decorations come out in the shops by the sleigh-full!  These decoration ideas are quick and easy to make for any level of crafter.

For my first trick, I recommend looking in the unexpected places for simple glass decorations. I often find beautiful glass decorations hidden on shelves in the most unlikely of shops. Avoid plastic and look for glass that has a nice patina or lustre about it. I take off any plastic string or trims and put into a basket or glass jar. You can stop here but I have more…

For me Liberty is synonymous with Christmas, ever since I ran a workshop with a fellow blogger in one of their beautifully panelled rooms. Adding a Liberty print to anything is one of my Christmas moves.

I now make a yearly visit to gather inspiration and buy each of my children a beautiful book. At Christmas time I look to their iconic Tana Cotton Lawn, carefully ripping strips of fabric to make ribbon. Threading onto the gathered glass decorations immediately makes them feel far more luxurious. I will either group a few, adding them to glass jars to make a thoughtful little gifts for teachers. Or simply add onto wrapped presents or just hang on the Christmas tree.

Other decoration ideas include –

Fillable glass baubles – use sequins, feathers or even dried flowers to make unique decorations.

These wooden decorations come out yearly.

And if you have a lot of random decorations that need using up, put them all onto one wreath! Crafty Little Bugs has great selection of  wreath bases.

I hope this post inspires you to get creative this season. My previous Christmas DIY post can be found here and if you’d like to join me at one of my Christmas workshops you can find the details in this post here. Happy Making!  x
